─Assistance given to three families to rebuild their lives

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Three families, who have been displaced through recent fires, today received donations from the Ministry of Social Protection to begin rebuilding their lives.

Social Protection’s Technical Officer Sonia Philander handed over basic household items to the families on behalf of Minister Amna Ally.

The families received kerosene stoves, mattresses, kitchen utensils and dry goods. They have been asked to visit the Social Protection ministry during the week to collect a voucher which affords them additional food items.

Affected by the fires were; Morette Morris, an office assistant attached to the Education Department at the Regional Democratic Council, Region 4(RDC) Triumph, East Coast Demerara and resided at Beterverwagting, Caroline Sasnarine and Karen Chung both of Mon Repos East Coast Demerara.

Earlier in January of this year the ministry also contributed significantly to a donation made to two families in the town of Linden. Construction material was handed over to Oscar Anthony and Roslyn Gordon to rebuild their homes.

As part of their mandate the Social Protection Ministry has a responsibility of protecting Guyanese in every aspect and in keeping with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) One (1) for eradicating poverty; as such the ministry ensures that support is provided to persons affected by disaster of any sort, to rebuild their lives.

The SDGs One is a bold commitment to end poverty in all forms and dimensions by 2030. This involves targeting the most vulnerable, increasing access to basic resources and services, and supporting communities affected by conflict and climate-related disasters.
