Social Protection Ministry raising awareness of elderly abuse

DPI, Guyana, Monday, June 18, 2018

In order to raise awareness on the prevention of abuse and neglect inflicted on some of the elderly, the Ministry of Social Protection’s Probation Department organised a march on Friday last.

Elderly residents of the Palms Geriatric Home, representatives of several NGOs and religious organisations along with members of the ministry marched from Cornhill Street, onto Brickdam and then to the Palms.

Probation and Social Services Officer, Claire Ann Rambarran explained that the exercise hosted under the theme “Seniors in our midst: Preventing Elderly Abuse” culminated a week of activities in observance of the World Elder Abuse Awareness 2018.

Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world.  The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 66/127, designated June 15, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted on some of our older generations.
