The long-awaited Sophia well was finally completed in late January. Guyana Water Incorporated’s (GWI), Director of Operations, Dwayne Shako told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that the company is currently installing the requisite amenities which will see Sophia and other Georgetown residents receiving 24-hour water supply shortly.

The recently completed Sophia Well.

The project flows from a 552,855 Euros contract signed in March 2017 between GWI and the Dutch firm De Ruiter Doringen for the construction of wells at Diamond, Sparendaam and Sophia.

Though the three wells were initially slated to be completed within a 12- week period, the Director of Operations explained that most of the equipment for the construction process had to await clearance at the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA). Despite this delay, he stated that all three wells were completed in record time.

Shako explained that the new well will be integrated into the Sophia plant to increase treated water coverage and the level of service provided to customers in the area. He further explained, “We’re putting in some infrastructure to bring that plant on 24 hours so the persons who are living in certain parts of A and B Fields Sophia and by extension Bel Air and other areas will see a longer and better service, basically a 24-hour service.”

According to Shako, the Sophia Water Treatment Plant operates from 5:00am to 10:00am then from 4:30pm to 10:00pm, “In between those times we have a low-pressure period. So, in the mornings persons would receive water at minimum/ 20 feet pressure but after 10:00pm the pressure would drop much lower.” He further explained, “the aim is to have a sustained pressure throughout the day and this will come into fruition once the Sophia plant starts operating for 24 hours.”

Residents of Sophia welcome the intervention. Sentelly Williams told DPI that, “I hope that in the future, I can get home in the night at 9:00pm and turn on my tap and get water to bathe and even drink.”

Another resident Michael Cadogan said, “I hope that this new initiative will be an ongoing programme and a great benefit to Sophia residents.” He related that over the years many residents complained of poor and untimely water supply.
