DPI, Guyana, Friday, November 2, 2018

The second day of the third Annual Special Needs sports meet was held today at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.  The two-day event, which is held annually since its commencement in 2015, is expected to be hosted for three days come 2019.

This is according to the Director of Sport, Christopher Jones whom this morning declared the athletics segment of the event open.

“We want to assure you that these games will continue in the future and of course, these games will continue to grow even larger. This year is the first time that the event is being held for two days because we added indoors activities. We are hopeful that come 2019 the games will be extended to three days, in which more disciplines could be added and more of you have the opportunity to participate in multiple sport activities,” Jones stated.

Additionally, the Sport Director told the students that the games are not only for competition but also to build teamwork, team spirit and self-confidence. The students whose faces were lit-up with smiles were eager to compete in the various events scheduled for the day.

Participating schools include Harold B. Davis Special School, St. Barnabus Special School, David Rose School for the Handicapped, Special Needs School East Bank Demerara, Gifted Hands Learning for Children, Open Doors Centre, New Amsterdam Special Needs School, Ministry of Education Unit for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Linde Centre for Special Needs Children and Guyana Society for the Blind.
