Sport Minister pledges support to GFF

DPI, Guyana, Friday, August 14, 2020

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Charles Ramson Jr., recently met with President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Wayne Forde, to discuss the creation of strategic partnerships to enable the development of sport in the country, particularly, football.

The GFF President assured of the federation’s commitment for a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership to advance football development at every level via the impact on human capital.

“Through football, we develop a passion for winning; we also learn to lose gracefully. We learn to respect the rules of the game and the importance of identifying a figure of authority, who is usually the coach. These are the hallmarks of the football experience,” Forde said.

Among the issues discussed was the support being provided to the scholarships and the ongoing infrastructural projects, including the FIFA and CONCACAF-supported projects.

These include the country’s first Football Technical Training Centre, currently under construction at Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and the D’Urban Park Complex which will consist of a playfield for international matches as well as several of smaller pitches for the promotion of community football.

Minister Ramson assured that his approach to the management of sport will be proactive and all-inclusive. He also noted his expectation that associations and federations must play a major role.

“We want to be able to collaborate, first and foremost; to be able to get football with all the main sports functioning at an optimum level, so that we can get young people playing sports, harnessing young talent for the bigger stage,” Minister Ramson explained.

He assured that the GFF can look forward to the full support from the Ministry.

Recognising that there may be challenges, the Minister noted that established partnerships are crucial to fostering the young talent that is available in Guyana. He noted that achieving this long-term goal would require a regular interface between the Ministry and the various federations and associations.

To this end, Minister Ramson and GFF president agreed to meet regularly, as they seek to further advance the development of the world’s most beautiful game.
