“Stand up for your govt” – DG Harmon to Guyana’s youth

─Says govt continues to meet educational needs of country’s youth

Director-General (DG) of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon appealed to the youths of Guyana to stand up for the government, just as the administration continues to support their development.

The DG was at the time addressing at a community meeting following the successful government outreach held in Bartica, Region 7.  He reminded the audience that since assuming office, the Coalition Government has worked assiduously to ensure the needs of Guyana’s youths are met, particularly in the education sector.

“From 2015 to June 2019, we have offered 1,599 scholarships to young people in this country,” DG Harmon highlighted. This figure represents a tremendous increase in the number of Guyanese being granted scholarships as compared to previous years. From 2013 to 2014 only 138 scholarships were granted to Guyanese students.

Aside from local scholarships, Guyanese students benefitted from overseas scholarships in countries such as the United Kingdom, China and Cuba. The Director-General underscored that “students in every single region, one to ten, have benefited from the scholarships.”

The Coalition Government has placed emphasis on ensuring that every child in Guyana has equal access to education. Under the guidance of President David Granger, the five B’s programme was implemented. This initiative saw Buses, Boats, Bicycles, Books and Breakfast being provided to students to ensure their attendance in school.

“We as a government stand with our young people and I am asking the young people all across this country – let us start here in Bartica – to stand up for your government.”

Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally donated 25 bicycles to the students in Bartica and the surrounding communities to ease their transportation woes.

Also present at the meeting were Minister of State, Dawn Hastings-Williams, Minister of Finance, Winston Jordan, and other government ministers and officials.
