Statement on deployment of Russia bomber aircraft to Venezuela

Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Public Diplomacy, December 12, 2018

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been approached with regards to reports of the deployment of two TU-160 supersonic bombers from the Russian Federation to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

We would therefore like to issue the following statement.

The Ministry is monitoring ongoing related developments.

It is important to note that military exercises are a regular feature of state relations and do not in themselves constitute a threat.

Further, Guyana is fully committed to the rule of international law, including the peaceful resolution of disputes.

Notwithstanding the ongoing border controversy, Guyana remains open to pursuing meaningful functional cooperation with Venezuela whenever that opportunity arises.

Guyana and Russia have had cordial diplomatic relations since December 17, 1970.
