The officers from Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and Ten 10 will be trained in various procedures aimed at eliminating the issue of trafficking from Guyana. The aim of the exercise is to ensure scourge is eliminated from Guyana’s shores.

In an earlier interview, Minister of Social Protection, Amna Ally said her ministry will continue to seek and formulate measures to ensure that enough support services are efficiently and effectively delivered.

“What we are interested in is curbing trafficking in persons or eliminating it. It cannot be a one-person business, it has to be a collaborative effort and that why we had the training of police and prosecutors,” Minister Amna Ally said.

The Minister said that her ministry will strengthen its communication with the Guyana Police Force and other stakeholders to adopt a collective approach to curb the illicit trade of humans.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, trafficking in persons refers to the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons by means of threat, use of force, without his or her consent for the purpose of exploitation.

In 2018, Guyana moved up from tier 2 ranking to tier 1. This means the country has reached the minimum standard for combatting trafficking in persons.

The government has approved a 2017-2018 national plan to combat trafficking in persons, through an established anti-trafficking unit, to increase the number of prosecutions, and the assistance to victims.
