Students, teachers turn out for first day of special term

— MOE provides free sanitisation kits

Students preparing to sit the NGSA, CSEC and CAPE examinations across the country along with their teachers turned out for the first day of the special term. The students were fully outfitted with their masks.

The Education Ministry has provided free sanitisation kits for every student which includes hand sanitisers, face masks, tissue and soap.

Minister of Education Dr. Nicolette Henry visited city schools today, to check on the implementation of safety measures and students.

Regional Education Officer, Region Three, Anesta Douglas explained that education officers are at various schools across the Region to ensure that all health measures are being implemented correctly.

“I am out in the field and we are monitoring the commencement of the engagement period for the Grade 6 learners in preparation for the National Grade Six Assessment 2020. We will also be monitoring the secondary schools,” Douglas told DPI.

Meanwhile, Head Teacher of the West Demerara Secondary School, Harrinarine said almost all of his fifth form students turned out to school. Additionally, he was pleased to have all of the school’s teachers on board.

“We have met as a staff to plan for our students’ revision which starts today [June 15]. We are offering all subject timetabled or offered for [CSEC] to our students. We have ensured on our timetable, that we cater to all those subjects to be revised. I’m happy that teachers have responded to this cause and we’re happy to have so many of our students turning out here today,” Harrinarine remarked.

Students are only expected to attend school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until their respective examinations commence. Additionally, the school day has been reduced to 4 hours which include a 30-minute lunch break.

Schools across Guyana have made preparations for students and teachers to be as safe as possible while learning, so in addition to the sanitization kits, teachers will be equipped with face shields; there will be handwashing stations erected in all schools; the buildings will be cleaned thoroughly twice daily and physical distancing stickers and other signage will be employed at all schools.
