Supenaam water supply to be restored on Thursday

– high consistency of iron, the reason for water shortage

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, September 11, 2019

The Managing Director of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Dr. Richard Van West-Charles has said the water supply is expected to be restored to Supenaam on Thursday, September 12.

Last weekend, residents of Supenaam in Region 2 reported that they were experiencing water issues for over a week and had resorted to sourcing water from the Essequibo River. The residents also stated that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has been providing water to the affected residents.

In an invited comment, Dr. Van West-Charles said a GWI team visited the region on Tuesday, September 10 and conducted an operation to flush out the wells, removing a high consistency of iron that clogged the free flow of water. He added that repairs are also ongoing on the Dry Shore well.

In the 2019 Budget, $2.9Billion was allocated for water improvement to complement the housing and agriculture sectors. Among the communities to benefit is Supenaam, where residents will benefit from improved water service following the expansion of transmission mains in Capoey, Hill Top and Mainstay, on the Essequibo Coast before the end of 2019.
