There must be a change in the attitude of motorists – Top Cop

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, December 17, 2019

Commissioner of Police Leslie James is calling on motorists to exercise more caution when using the roadways.

“We would like to see a change in the attitude of motorists in the way in which they use our roads,” he told the media.

According to the commissioner, it is the reckless way in which motorists choose to use the road at times that leads to serious accidents and fatalities.

He said the regulations which deal with road use are tied to the conduct of motorists.

“The current law as it is today, and penalties like fines being given to persons who are found driving dangerously and even where persons are incarcerated following a fatal accident being charged with dangerous driving, I think it is sufficient but it speaks to the attitude in which persons are conducting themselves,” the police chief underscored.

There were 21 road fatalities in November alone with speeding and alcohol being the main contributing factors for the accidents.

There were 85 road deaths, including six children, from 75 accidents from January 1 to October 30 this year. In comparison, 2018 registered 92 road fatalities from 79 accidents.

Commissioner James said mermbers of the police force are on the streets in their numbers with the recent launch of Operation Safe Road.
