Thousands to benefit from road rehab at Tuschen, Zeelugt

Thousands of Guyanese residing in Tuschen and Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo will benefit from some $250 million in road repairs planned for the area.

Works are expected to commence within a week.

On Saturday, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Hon. Deodat Indar visited the communities and noted that an assessment of the state of the roads countrywide was one of the first things the government did on assuming office.

He indicated that focus is being placed on the most deplorable ones in densely populated areas.

“We’re coming here to make sure that we start the process of fixing these roads on a continuous basis so that we can do it incrementally in phases so that most of the roads can be fixed if not all of it within our first five years.”

Four main roads have been identified in Tuschen as well as Zeelugt. Minister Indar said works will also be done on other streets on a smaller scale.

“We are going to be doing some grubbing which is smoothing out of some of the roads we are walking right now so at least you won’t get the bumpy ride or damage your car,” he explained.

Speaking to DPI, Chairman of the Tuschen/Uitvlugt Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Mr. Vishal Ambedkar disclosed that earlier calls for the road repairs had fallen on deaf ears.

“Over the last five years at the NDC level, we have persistently made representation to have the roads in this scheme done and to no avail. We have met with all the former ministers in government and all we received were promises. Today we are glad to see a step in the right direction to improve the infrastructure of the roads in the scheme becoming a reality.” The NDC Chairman also expressed gratitude to the Government for the timely intervention.
