Toddler’s Reading Programme taken to Region Nine

DPI, Guyana, Friday, May 4, 2018

With the unveiling of a mobile bookshelf at the Lethem Hospital Health Centre, the Early Childhood Development Unit’s Basic Toddler Reading Programme has reached Region Nine, Upper Takatu/Upper Essequibo.

According to a release from the Ministry of Social Protection, the launch also saw the distribution of books for toddlers who were in attendance.

The Back to Basics reading programme encourages parents to read to their children while waiting at health centres or to borrow books and return at a later date. It is aimed at preparing toddlers for formal education while fostering an early interest in books.

After officially launching the reading programme in Region Four in February, the Childcare and Protection Agency (CPA) implemented the initiative in Regions Three, Ten and now, Region Nine.

The Back to Basics: Toddlers’ Reading programme is expected to be established at over 300 health centres and 360 childcare facilities across the country. The childcare centres will also be required to establish a library or reading corner for the children.

The programme is a result of collaborations between the Ministry of Social Protection’s Child Care and Protection Agency, Ministry of Public Health/Maternal and Child Health Unit and the National Library.
