Towards a brighter Georgetown

Inspired by the work and example of His Worship the Mayor of Georgetown Pandit Ubraj Narine to restore the capital city to its former glory; members of Muslim Core Groups attached to the Department of Social Cohesion, Culture, Youth and Sport held a clean-up exercise at Parliament Square today.
Among the groups participating in the exercise were Guyana Islamic Trust, the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana and the Muslim Youth League among others.
Speaking with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Chairman of Muslim Core Groups, Roshan Khan explained the exercise is a joint effort between the organisations and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC). He explained the effort aims to clean and “brighten” various environs within the city of Georgetown.
“This idea is simple yet symbolic. It is an effort to mostly awaken the minds of our people that they need to save the earth and environment…to realise that we have to care this land like our mother and help nourish it,” he said.
A representative of the Guyana Islamic Trust, Brother Wasser appealed to the residents of Georgetown to be more responsible in their disposal of garbage. He noted that persons must be mindful of how they treat the city’s landmarks.
Khan added that this is the first in a series of planned clean-up efforts, with other exercises slated for the Palms Geriatric Home, various orphanages and other areas. He is encouraging others to partner the M&CC to conduct similar efforts.
The Parliament Square is a recreational garden located at the corner of High Street and Brickdam. The green space nestled in the historic setting of the Parliament Buildings was reopened Minister of Communities, Hon. Ronald Bulkan in June 2015, it coincided with the sitting of Guyana’s 11th Parliament.
