Turkish Ambassador pays courtesy call on President- calls for support as Turkey contests UN Security Council post

As part of Turkey’s push to secure a seat on the United Nations’ Security Council, Non-resident Turkish Ambassador Ebru Barutçu Gökdenizler paid a courtesy call on President Donald Ramotar today.
Speaking to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the ambassador said she was, “on a mission” to elicit the Government of Guyana’s support as her native country seeks to accede to a coveted seat on the UN’s Security Council and as such delivered personally a letter from Turkish President Abdullah Gull.

Ambassador Barutçu Gökdenizler, added that the issue of improving bilateral trade and international relations were also discussed along with other key issues affecting the Caribbean region. It was also disclosed that a new ambassador will be accredited, in the near future, to Guyana from Turkey.
The ambassador served between 2009-2012 first as Deputy Director General and then as the Director General for Americas, covering political and economic relations with a total of 35 countries in North, Central and South America. She is currently serving in Lisbon as Ambassador of Turkey to Portugal since September 2012.
An Economic and Commercial Cooperation Agreement was signed between Turkey and Guyana during the 6th Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organisation held in Hong Kong from December 13-18, 2005. Turkey’s exports to Guyana average a total of approximately 5.5 million USD and its annual imports from Guyana are around 2.5 million USD.
