─ students of Patentia and Craig Primary schools to benefit

─ labs cost over $12M

DPI, Guyana, Monday, November 5, 2018

As the Ministry of Education continues its effort to integrate Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into the schools’ curriculum, students of Patentia and Craig Primary schools are now beneficiaries of two Information Technology (IT) laboratories

Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry urged the students to fully utilise the laboratories for the enhancement of their education.

“I want our students to ensure that they are using the lab for learning purposes and I also want to see connectivity between these labs and smart classroom programme… Technology enabling learning is very important for what is currently happening in Guyana and in the world,” Minister Henry said.

It was highlighted that the initiative aims to provide access to quality education and learning materials.

The minister said both schools will, in 2019, be outfitted with robotics labs. This, she noted, is among other technology-based programmes.

Minister Henry assured that the ministry will continue to invest in the development of the nation’s future leaders.

Yoganand Indarsingh, Head of the Management Information System (MIS) Unit, urged the teachers to explore options to fully utilise technology. “Today, with computers in the schools, teachers have a richer avenue to impart learning,” he noted.

Rhianna Beckles, a Grade Six student at the Patentia Primary School, told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that she “feels excited because if I do not understand something in class… I can ask my teacher to assist on the computer to research and understand more about what has been taught”.

Nicholai Sugrim, Grade Six student also of the Patentia Primary School, expressed that this initiative will assist him tremendously especially for research and homework.

Another Grade Six student, Daniel Ross, of the Craig Primary School, said while he welcomes the initiative, he is saddened that he will be unable to fully utilise the lab.

Both Headteachers expressed their appreciation to the ministry for the initiative and pledged to care the equipment.

The labs cost over $12M, which includes installation of computers, printers, routers and other devices.
