Two new smart health centres for Region Five

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Hundreds of Region Five, (Mahaica-Berbice) residents will benefit from two new smart health centres which were opened today.

The facilities are equipped with modern amenities including improved disability access, designated dressing rooms, more beds, cleaner and more adequate space, a designated antenatal room, a pharmacy and better waiting areas.

At the opening ceremonies today, Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence urged the nurses and other medical personnel present, to care the facilities and to ensure they fulfill their commitment to serving their country by using the new facilities to best serve citizens.

She further encouraged residents to use the facility for its intended purpose and “prioritise your health and encourage others to do so, if you are not healthy you are jeopardizing your dreams. You can empower your life by being more health conscious.”

The two facilities fulfill the needs of residents, who previously had to travel miles to the nearest health centres or use the older, dilapidated buildings.

Miressa Abrams, a midwife attached to the newly constructed High Dam Health Centre, in Carlton Hall Village, expressed her satisfaction with the new facility. “We’ll be able to give quality health care; the community will be able to go out and access better care than before.  [I’ll enjoy] the new furniture and beds and proper working equipment so we don’t have to be improvising like before,” Abrams said.

Expressing similar sentiments, Dr. Abdool Subhan, the doctor in charge of Cotton Tree Health Centre on the West Coast of Berbice, said previously they were operating under certain constraints.  However, with the new centre, they are now better able to serve their patients.

With the opening of these new facilities, the region now has a total of seventeen health centres serving its citizens.
