Two new wards under construction at Palms

Two new wards are being constructed at the Palms Geriatric Home as the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security looks to boost the services provided at the facility.

Construction is expected to be completed by month end.

Medical Services Coordinator, Ms.  Doneth Mingo, says the additional space is welcomed as it would increase efficiency and residents’ safety.

“Residents will be categorised and place[d] in different wards. Those who are bedridden will stay at the bottom flat to improve mobility in case of an emergency, and those who can move a little will be at the middle flat,’ Ms. Mingo noted.

The Palms will also soon benefit from essential equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches and prosthetics, which were catered for in Budget 2020, she said.

The Medical Services Coordinator said the Palms has a roster of activities planned for the ‘Month of the Elderly’ observances, which is being celebrated under the theme, “Pandemic- Do they change how we address age and ageing?’

This included a special luncheon, which was held Thursday last under tents outdoors and saw residents dressed up, served, and serenaded. They were ably assisted by Patient Care Assistants at the facility, Ms. Mingo said.

There are also plans to host a movie night and an interactive session with residents and staff. Care packages will also be distributed to each resident. Currently, two resident doctors, three registered nurses, four nursing assistants and 91 patient care assistants care for the more than 150 residents at the home.
