The University of Guyana (UG) is ensuring students are in the forefront of its plans with the formal signing of an agreement with Power Producers and Distributors Incorporated (PPDI) that will facilitate hands-on training for those within the Faculty of Technology.

The agreement was signed this morning at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus in the presence of representatives of both parties.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Engagement, University of Guyana (UG), Professor Michael Scott, told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that “it’s imperative that we give our students as much industrial experience as possible because that not only helps them to relate their theoretical knowledge in classroom to industrial experience in the industrial environment but also gives them the opportunity to grow character-wise.”

Professor Scott further explained that this engagement is one which has grown over a period of 12 years, minus a formal legal agreement. He believes that the formal agreement will strengthen the relationship the University shares with PPDI.

“This inking of an agreement is basically a confirmation of that commitment and a desire for our relationships to be deepened so that at the end of the day our students benefit from the best opportunities that could be offered,” Scott said.

The formalisation of the partnership agreement between PPDI and UG will see the University receiving $1.5M per year while five students will be sent on industrial attachment every year with the PPDI.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PPDI, Arron Fraser, reiterating the company’s commitment to the University and its students stated, “We have selected the University essentially because over the years we’ve seen the quality of their students and we want to enable them to sustain their engineering programmes. In the past we would’ve benefited tremendously from the graduates of this programme, so much so that 60% of our management staff are University of Guyana graduates,” Fraser said.
