UG must continue to develop multi-discipline courses – says incoming Chancellor

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, November 12, 2019

“If we look at what is happening in the world presently, we are looking at the 2030 agenda for the [UN] Sustainable Development Goals, but to do that, we need people within academic institutions to help to translate the meaning of those,” said the University of Guyana’s (UG) incoming Chancellor, Professor Edward Greene.

He was at the time speaking with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on the sidelines of the media launch for the 45th Caribbean Studies Association Conference that will be held in Guyana in June 2020. He will be taking up the instruments of office, following the university’s 2019 convocation ceremony.

According to Professor Greene, the development of multidisciplinary science approaches needs to be continued.

After citing the diverse academic field in climate change that is pursued in the wider world, Professor Green lauded UG for making strides in this regard that ties into his vision for the academic institution.

“I am pleased that the university is piloting a PhD project in Biodiversity because that is the quintessential kind of programme for a multidisciplinary approach,” the Chancellor-elect stated.

While Professor Green acknowledged his willingness to “champion the university’s reconstruction of its course projections”, high hopes were expressed for the university to advance its efforts to reach out to communities.

Concerning the Open/Distance Education Unit, the Professor expressed that with expansion in the current digital age, it should lead students to, “courses which people can review that will contribute to gaining degrees in the future.”

Moreover, greater participation by the alumni in UG’s affairs is one of the many expectations of Professor Green as the university continues to progress. Another desire the academic expressed was for UG to become more involved in national debates during cycles of national elections.

Professor Green will replace outgoing Chancellor, Professor Nigel Harris.
