UG students to get new library facility

The University of Guyana in collaboration with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) today signed a USD$150,00 towards the construction of a new and all-inclusive library facility at the University’s, Turkeyen campus.

The new building will be located west of the current library, is expected to house modern facilities, rooms and creative spaces, more conducive to student welfare and research.

It aims also to be a socially inclusive space with optimal functionality and will cater for students with special needs and house a refreshment café for students to enjoy, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Barbara Reynolds explained at the signing ceremony in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

Reynolds told members of the media that constructing this new facility is a positive step that will combat the trials being experienced by current students including inadequate space and outdated facilities.

“We’re here to symbolically celebrate and recognise the moment when we formally begin the process of putting together all that is necessary for the construction of the library.”

The construction of the library will be done in two phases. According to Reynolds, the first stage of the initiative is slated to be completed within the next seven months. The grant from the CDB will help with the technical design work and costings. Calls for expression of interest are expected to soon be published in local newspapers.

Additionally, a structural assessment of the old library building’s structural integrity will be carried out and based on the evaluation presented, the building may be repurposed after suitable repairs and reconditioning has occurred.
