Under Coalition Reg. Six has seen massive improvement- MP Charrandass Persaud

– rehabilitation of New Amsterdam Hospital maternity ward on schedule for completion

– streetlights installed in several communities

– roads and bridges rehabilitated

In his defence of the 2019 national budget, Government Member of Parliament Charrandass Persaud highlighted the improvement evident in Region Six under the Coalition government.

Naming the Corentyne highway, Persaud said there used to be long stretches of dark, blind zones, however, this has since changed with streetlighting project that saw the installation of street lamps from New Amsterdam to Palmyra; Fyrish to Port Mourant and Number 79 Village to Crabwood Creek and the Number 19 Village, Corentyne.

With regards to bridges; the MP drew attention to the construction or rehabilitation of these structures in the communities of Kildonan, Nurney, Ulverston, Johanna, Black Bush Polder and Angoy’s Avenue.

Charrandass also highlighted the fact that several roads were repaired in communities across the region, also pointing to the newly resurfaced East Bank Berbice road which has brought relief to long-suffering residents. He reminded the Opposition MPs that the previous administration has claimed that this area was a stronghold of theirs, but for years the road was left in deplorable condition.

With regards to the maternity ward, Persaud says the $191Million project, is set for completion by the ending of 2019. The MP said he is pleased with work done thus far, especially that rehabilitation is well within its prescribed time.

“Once completed, Berbice will benefit greatly” … “pregnant women will no longer have to share a hospital bed,” Persaud said.

The new wing is expected to significantly improve clinical and management services and contribute significantly to the reduction of maternal deaths and infant mortality.

As he contributed to Tuesday’s budget debate, Persaud also revealed that the doctor’s quarter and CT Scan room at the hospital were also among those areas currently being rehabilitated.

When completed the new one-story rectangular ward will cater for 100 beds, parking facilities, two operating theatres, four delivery rooms and viewing areas for visitors. The facility is being constructed by S and K Construction and Consultancy Services and General Supplies.
