University of Guyana ‘Lights up Blue’ for Autism

DPI, Guyana, Saturday, April 7, 2018

A ceremony was held at the University of Guyana in recognition of the United Nations World Autism Awareness Day (April 2).  This followed an invitation from the “Autism Speaks” organisation, for the institution to be involved in the global ‘Light It up Blue’ campaign.

As of April 6, 2018, every night for rest of the month, the registry building at the Turkeyen Campus will be lit blue. This is in keeping with the worldwide observance of World Autism Awareness Month 2018.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Paulette Paul said that, “This activity intends to shine a light on Autism and help increase understanding and acceptance of these individuals.”

The blue lights were provided by Pulse Entertainment while approval was given by UG’s Registrar for the registry building to be lit. This is the ninth year the global ‘Light It up Blue’ campaign has shone the spotlight on children, individuals and families across the globe, living with Autism.

The event is observed by the international community where hundreds of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world, are lit in blue in recognition of people living with autism. Advocate body ‘Autism Speaks’ supports and emphasises the need for Autism-friendly events and educational activities to take place throughout the entire month of April, increasing awareness and fostering worldwide support.
