Upward mobility evident in Mabaruma

DPI, GUYANA, Sunday, March 11, 2018

The anticipation of a bright future has enveloped the township of Mabaruma in Region One (Barima/Waini) as a host of new development projects are underway, under the leadership of the new Mayor and Town Council.

From the expansion of the soon-to-be opened Kumaka Marketing Tarmac to a multi-million dollar solar farm, Mabaruma is making significant strides in its status as a new town. Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan during a visit to the town on Friday last, saw the changes for himself and expressed satisfaction with the progress.

“I must say that I share the excitement that is so evident and that is being spoken about by Mayor Henry Smith and Town Clerk Barrington Ward along with Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley. It is this spirit of cooperation between various councils and layers of administration that we need to bring out development and improved standards and transform our communities. I must say today has been an exciting day for me,” Minister Bulkan told the Department of Public Communication.

The Kumacka Marketing Tarmac is expected to be completed in a month’s time and will see vendors who are currently occupying the roadside of the Kumaka Marketing Centre (also known as the “waterfront”) relocating to the tarmac.  The waterfront has also undergone a major overhaul.

“I was happy that in my interaction with the vendors to hear directly from them, that they have bought in to this program. That they have seen the wisdom and necessity for moving away from this state of congestion and chaos to a well ordered and appointed facilities; those stalls that are being constructed at the tarmac,” the Minister said.

The word from Town Clerk, Barrington Ward is that the residents are very excited about the changes which demonstrate that Mabaruma is “on the move.” Minister Bulkan said he was able to witness evidence of this for himself.

“It is visible. I was here in 2014 and I can attest to the absolute chaos that characterised this area and one can clearly see the transformation in progress,” he said.

Minister Bulkan’s visit to the “waterfront” was preceded by a visit to the Mabaruma Town Council; a very fine building that is also on the road to development.

A young resident Clarence Hinds donated $225,000 worth of street lights to the municipality for the community of Kumaka. Minister Bulkan and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communities Emil McGarrell also participated in a tree planting exercise on the lawn of the Town Hall.

The Communities Minister also visited the proposed landfill site for the town.
