GUYANA, DPI/GINA, Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Youths from various schools across Georgetown today, joined the rest of the world in observing World Challenge Day 2017. At the Square of the Revolution, school children were engaged in a number of physical exercises which were organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Director of Sports Christopher Jones, who attended the activity, noted that the initiative invites persons to stop what they are doing and commit to at least 15 minutes of exercise.

The students were guided by instructors on some basic exercises that they can practice on a daily basis, aimed at creating consciousness and passion for health and active living for all participants.

“What our instructors will be doing throughout the programme is (to) show them some simple exercises that they can do on a daily basis just for 15 minutes… hopefully thereafter these students from the various schools can go back to their respective homes, do the similar exercises, and teach that to their parents.

Jones pointed out that the NSC will, “on a yearly basis organise this event, bring it out to the Square of the Revolution and invite several schools that would come out here and be part of the programme.”

World Challenge Day was initiated in 1991 by The Association for International Sports for All (TAFISA) and it is a friendly international competition or physical activity challenge, organised within communities from around the world to compete and motivate each other to be physically active for 15 minutes daily.

The event is fun natured and is aimed at creating consciousness and passion for health and active living for all participants.
