Vector Control Services roll out second Schools’ Language & Arts competition

For the next two months, children between the ages of six to seventeen (6-17), will have the opportunity to prepare artistic pieces in the form of poetry, essays, and drawings to promote prevention of Lymphatic Filariasis (LF).

The competition which began on April 9, is being held under the theme, ‘Filaria prevention, the best cure’. Prizes and other rewards will be provided by the hosts, the Ministry of Public Health’s Vector Control Services with responsibility for Neglected and Infectious Diseases (NID).

Speaking with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Director of Neglected Infectious Diseases, MoPH, Dr. Fabu Moses disclosed that the competition has a dual purpose.

“Our school competition where we try to get children … involved in poetry writing, essay writing, drawings and other forms of art and language activities to promote LF… and the public will also have more information on the prevention of LF.”

She also added that the essay, poetry, and poster/drawing competition is one of the many initiatives the ministry has undertaken to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis by the year 2022.

The age 6 to 7 category, instructions indicate that entrants can colour the poster template provided, to their own taste and write a three-line description of the drawing and give a title.

The 8 to 11 categories can also colour the poster template provided and complete it with a design of their own. They are also allowed to write a short story and provide a title or compose a rhyme of ten (10) lines.

The 12 to 14 categories can submit a poem 15 to 20 lines; an essay comprising 300 to 500 words or design a logo for the Filaria Prevention Campaign. The 15 to 17 age group can either write a poem of 20 to 30 lines, create a logo for the Filaria/MDA campaign or design a banner in relation to theme provided. A catch-phrase must be used.

Entries must include a title page clearly stating Full Name, Date of Birth, Age, Address, Name of School, Contact Number.

While the competition is ongoing, NID staff will disseminate adequate information about LF to achieve maximum participation of students within the age range.

Drop boxes for entries will be made available at the National Library, the regional education offices countrywide, the Ministry of Education and all health centres in Guyana.
