Visit to Guyana Embassy in Washington D.C. by Brightwood Education Campus    

On Wednesday, May 17, 2017, the Embassy of Guyana in Washington, D.C. hosted sixth-grade students of the Brightwood Education Campus as the highlight of the Embassy’s participation in the 2017 Embassy Adoption Programme.

The progamme, which was established in 1974 as a partnership between the District of Columbia Public Schools and the Washington Performing Arts, provides opportunities for DC students to experience an international perspective and participate in cross-cultural activities, through interaction with diplomats from across the world. This year marks 39 years since the Embassy of Guyana has participated.

The Ambassador of Guyana, Dr. Riyad Insanally, in welcoming the teachers and students from Brightwood and representative from the Washington Performing Arts, expressed appreciation for the enthusiasm of the students in learning about Guyana’s rich history and culture and credited them with being honorary ambassadors for Guyana.

The students were able to use the knowledge gained from visits to their school by First Secretary Mr. John Chester-Inniss, Financial Attaché Ms. Debra Williams and Executive Officer Ms. June Dublin, to prepare presentations on Guyana. They had even learned the National Anthem of Guyana, which they sang beautifully. The Embassy for its part treated the visiting students to a lesson in Masquerade dancing by Guyanese Ms. Suzanne Matthews and to an array of delicious Guyanese cuisine. The students’ teacher, Mr. Elliot Borg, said that he was overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome they had received and they had all thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
