“We did not give any instruction to the police” – Min. Harmon clarifies

─ the GPF is authorised to act based on their own judgement

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, April 17, 2019

“We did not give any instruction to the police. The police as the law enforcement agency of this country, have to do their work and if anyone breaches the law, then the police are authorised to take action, in their own deliberate judgement, and with the advice of the police legal adviser, they will take action.”

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon making a statement at the University of Guyana, Tain Campus, Berbice.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon made this declaration at the government’s outreach held at the University of Guyana’s Tain Campus in Berbice.

The State Minister was responding to allegations made by the Leader of the Opposition and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Bharrat Jagdeo.

Jagdeo claimed that the Guyana Police Force (GPF) was instructed by Congress Place and the Ministry of the Presidency to arrest and charge him for willfully inciting or attempting to incite racial hostility in his speech at Babu Jaan, Port Mourant, Corentyne, while at the death anniversary observance of the party’s founder, the late Dr Cheddi Jagan.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has since refuted the allegations and made it clear that the Ministry of the Presidency, the People’s National Congress-Reform or A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have not given any such instruction or advice.

Furthermore, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) wishes to state that it remains a professional organisation and any action previously or currently being taken, is wholly pursuant to legal advice obtained and or to engage in investigations.
