During an engagement with members of the media today at his office, the Mayor said he is prepared to work with every citizen of Georgetown to build the municipality. However, he said citizens also have a responsibility.

“I feel that the citizens of Georgetown need to do more in terms of cooperating with the council. We need to work together, not to build walls, but to build bridges. And, if we have that kind of cohesion among us, Georgetown can be a better place.”

While the council is yet to meet for its first statutory meeting, the Mayor said there is a vision, which requires funds. He reminded that the council “runs” on rates and taxes. If taxes are not received, then the operation of the council will crumble. Mayor Narine said the council is offering an “open door” policy to all residents, to visit the relevant departments on respective matters.

“There is a lot. A vision, but you cannot execute it without money, it is not something that will happen by magic. Everything takes time,” he said, noting that he is still awaiting the council’s 2019 budget from the finance committee. “From there, the council will move forward in the execution of its plans.”

“I am here to work with them. The council is here to work with them, so we could have a better environment and place when it comes to Georgetown,” the Mayor.

During the first year of his tenure, Narine hopes to inspire “accountability, transparency and integrity within the council.”
