─ no one should try to influence the direction of the court’s decision

─ we must abide by the consequences of the ruling

DPI, Guyana, Monday, January 28, 2019

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo says that the Judiciary must be allowed to make its pronouncement on the constitutionality of the December 21 vote.

Hon. Moses Nagamootoo, Prime Minister of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana.

In an exclusive interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Prime Minister Nagamootoo explained that while there are several issues before the Chief Justice now, the wider implication of her ruling “would be that the Judiciary is independent and the Judiciary has a role in the functions of the state, it is an important pillar of the state.”

In addition, the Prime Minister said, “I believe we should allow the Judiciary to make its pronouncements and not try to influence the direction in which it will go and abide by the consequences of the rulings.”

The Prime Minister further explained, “we should have respect for the independence of the Judiciary and respect for all the hierarchical structure of the Judiciary.” He noted that all persons must respect the process and try not to bring it into the political arena.

“I totally abhor that some people, who should know better, are trying to give an interpretation of what might emerge from the judicial process and are also trying to anticipate the decision of the court,” the Prime Minister highlighted.

Following the December 21, 2018 vote, the Supreme Court of Judicature has been approached to determine whether former Government Member of Parliament (MP), Charandass Persaud was qualified to vote in the National Assembly.
