The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) has recorded a 23 per cent increase in arrivals during May 2019 when compared to the same period last year.

The airport’s authority, in a Facebook post, declared statistics on arrivals and departures for the year to date. A whopping 31,653 passengers entered the country for May compared to 25,542 for the same period last year.

The stats posted on the Cheddi Jagan International Airport’s (CJIA) Facebook Page.

The arrivals for May of this year represent the highest number thus far for the year and can be directly correlated to the recently concluded Guyana Carnival season and Independence celebrations.

Overall, 62,133 passengers were processed for arrivals and departures for the month that month, bringing the total number of passengers processed for the year to 256,178. This represents an increase of just over 3 per cent when compared to last year’s figures for the same period, 246,667.

With the growing popularity of the Carnival celebrations coupled with Guyanese from the Diaspora returning home for Independence celebrations, these numbers are expected to grow in the coming years.

The effect of the Carnival Season has had a resounding impact on the local tourism industry and has provided a significant boost to small businesses that operate within the sector.
