West Demerara youths participate in ‘Green Generation Guyana (3G) camp

DPI, GUYANA, Monday, August 14, 2017

Today, over ninety youths from the West Demerara catchment area, will participate in the Ministry of Communities’ Regional ‘Green Generation Guyana’ (3G) camp. This initiative is part of the ministry’s green generation project under the Solid Waste Management Unit which caters for children between ages 8 to 16.

The enterprise under the theme, ‘Go Green, Stay Green, ’is a collaborative effort between the Ministry, Regional Administration and Region Three’s Department of Education.

In brief remarks, Minister within Ministry of Communities, Dawn Hastings-Williams explained that the aim of the initiative is to sensitise the youths on safe solid waste management and practices that includes waste separation, reuse, recycle and rethink.

“Our aim and our hope is that for this next generation of Guyanese, good solid waste management practices would be a natural way of life,” Minister Hastings-Williams said. She noted that the ministry remains committed to developing the ‘Green Economy’ agenda designed by President David Granger.

“The government is steadfast with instilling in the minds of the children and teenagers healthy habits that will ensure the transfer of knowledge from generation to generation of a green economy that will develop our nation (Guyana),” Minister

Hastings-Williams explained.

The minister highlighted her expectation that the youths will practice what they have learnt and share the knowledge

with others.

Regional Education Officer (REdO) Penelope Mc Intosh conveyed her gratitude towards the ministry for launching the initiative. She said that the enterprise will promote a cleaner and greener country with the help of youths.

Mc Intosh explained that the camp targeted “primary and secondary school students within the West Demerara Secondary School catchment area, which includes Crane Primary School, Vreed-en-Hoop Primary and Secondary schools as well as the West Demerara Secondary School. However, we have children from other communities who joined in after hearing about the aim of the camp”.

The REdO disclosed that there were issues getting the children to participate in the camp due to a misunderstanding in relation to the camp’s timing but parents came on board and allowed their children to participate.

Shanequa Corbin, a student of the West Demerara Secondary School told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that she was glad to be a part of the initiative and hoped to learn much to share with others. She noted that she was delighted after listening to the minister’s overview of the camp.

Carl Gillford, another student of the West Demerara Secondary School said that he decided to participate in the camp after his teacher told him about the initiative. He opined that the project will be beneficial to everyone participating, and hopes that it will be launched in the remaining administrative regions so that others can also benefit.

Since Minister Hastings-Williams  launched the 3G camps in August 2016 along the Linden Soesdyke highway, over 200 students from 20 primary schools across Guyana have benefitted from the project.
