“We’ve transformed this nation” – Min. Ferguson

DPI, Guyana, Tuesday, November 12, 2019

The 9B classroom at the South Ruimveldt Secondary School came alive with cheers and applause as Minister within the Ministry of Communities with responsibility for Housing, Hon. Annette Ferguson spoke about the Coalition Government’s work over the past four years.

“Your government, in four years of its existence, we would’ve transformed this entire nation, not only on the coastland but we have invested tremendously in the hinterland. Because dear to His Excellency’s heart is that of bridging the gap between the hinterland and the coastland.”

The government has been implementing several infrastructural initiatives in the interior regions of the country. As a result of this work, accessibility and travel time in many interior locations has been considerably reduced.

“From 2015 to now, we have seen an increase in wages and salaries from $39,000 to $64,200. From 2015 to now, an increase in the old-age pension, over 50% increase,” Minister Ferguson continued.

To date, the minimum wage has increased exponentially, thereby allowing a better living for all Guyanese. Added to this, public servants have benefitted from more than 60% in salary increases over the four years. It was recently announced that with this year’s increase to public servants, the overall wage increase percentage will top 75%.

Minister Ferguson also took time to touch on a crucial part of democracy for the residents of South Ruimveldt – Local Government Elections (LGE).

“From 1994, to now, the previous administration deprived us of electing our local people to serve at that level, to ensure the necessary services were being made available to you – the people in your community. But we committed to you the people of this nation, that once elected to government, we will ensure the return of local democracy.”
