Winifred re-elected as New Amsterdam Mayor

– Wainwright McIntosh to serve as deputy

– APNU Councillor Buster Wright elected as Finance Committee Chairman

Retired Headteacher Winifred Heywood, was on Wednesday morning unanimously re-elected to serve as Mayor of New Amsterdam, while the chair for the Deputy-Mayor will now be occupied by Education Officer Wainwright McIntosh.

Heywood, who is a long-serving member of the New Amsterdam Town Council, first held the post of Deputy-Mayor before being elected as Mayor of the town in November 2017, after the then Mayor Kirt Wynter had resigned

Mayor Winifred has since vowed to further enhance the Town. She acknowledged that the past years being in the Mayor’s seat was challenging and called on the councillors to put away their differences and unite to ensure the Town of New Amsterdam continues to develop the citizens are satisfied.

“I wanted to run again because we have to restore this town to its former glory,” Heywood said. She thanked the councillors for nominating and electing her to serve as mayor for another term.

New Deputy Mayor, Wainwright McIntosh, said he looks forward to working collaboratively with his colleagues, members of staff of the Municipality and members of the community.

“It is an honour to serve the people of New Amsterdam as Deputy-Mayor, I do look for the continued support of community members,” McIntosh said while adding that the council will work without exceptions or reversals to meet the needs of the residents

A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Councillor Buster Wright was elected as Finance Committee Chairman and Councillor Pollian Schultz as deputy. Other Committee members are councillors Kirk Fraser, Sheeanta Lambert and Patricia Lynch.

Residents, who attended the morning ceremony, expressed their satisfaction with both the Mayor and Deputy-Mayor and promised to support and make contributions when necessary.

President of the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA), Ryan Alexander noted that the organisation is committed to assisting the Municipality in any way possible. He also made a donation of fifty thousand dollars towards the municipality’s monthly senior feeding programme.

Resident and Minister of Education, Dr. Nicolette Henry was also present at the elections.
