Yarrowkabra gets the help it needs

Residents of Yarrowkabra braved the scattered showers and came out in their numbers to a community meeting with Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Valerie Garrido-Lowe.
The residents are excited for the work done by the government thus far in pushing to finally have a Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC). However, members of the Coal Burners Association indicated they needed help. This was best explained by Anthony Pollard, a Coal Burner in the Association. According to Pollard, they would usually purchase wood from a person who rents state lands. The rental reportedly raised which, in turn, has affected the cost for wood.
This was not the only issue, as concerns were raised over persons being unable to apply for lands that have been leased but not occupied for several years. This was especially urgent for single mother and farmer, Murlene Singh.
Minister Garrido-Lowe gave her commitment to Singh and other single-parent mothers that she will have the issues addressed.
She also called on the women to form a women’s association so that courses in various skills could be facilitated to help the youth, women and men in the community.
Towards the end of the meeting, Minister Garrido-Lowe distributed sport gear to the football and volleyball teams from the village. Further, she encouraged them to practice and hone their skills so they would be able to partake in major sporting events in the future.
