Over ten youths in Yarrowkabra, Silver Hill and other neighbouring communities on the Linden Soesdyke Highway were honoured for their excellent performance at the recent National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

On August 25, the high achievers were recognised by the Yarrowkabra and Silver Hill Community Development Council (CDC). During a simple ceremony held at the Yarrowkabra Primary School, the students were presented with backpacks filled with school supplies and electronic tablets.

District, Community Development Officer, Derryck Boyce, encouraged the youths to keep on “climbing the academic ladder has they strived for greater success.”

“We, at the Community Development Council, will roll out a scholarship programme to assist you along the way in your academic endeavours. You are here today because you have made your parents, teachers and community proud and it is our duty to support you, the youths,” Boyce said.

He further stated that among the Grade Six students, the top performer obtained, 507 marks at the recent NGSA examinations noting that it is the first time a ceremony was held in observance of the youth’s success. Boyce also added that the ceremony was made possible by contributions from the private sector.

“Recently, a new Neighbourhood Democratic Council [NDC] was formed in the community and they have also pledged their support to assist the youths of Yarrowkabra and Silver Hill within the sport sector,” Boyce mentioned.

Top CSEC Performer from the area, Aliya Seecharran, who was very overwhelmed, said that she worked hard day and night to be successful at her exams.

“It was not easy, there were many late nights and dedication, I quit many social activities, such as sports and dancing to turn all my attention to my studies and I do not regret. I want to be a teacher and return to my community to give back,” she said.

Seechaan, who will be pursuing her ‘A’ levels at St Rose’s High School, encouraged other youths to “practice discipline, listen to their elders and walk a straight path in life.”
