Youth ambassadors sign empowerment declaration atop Turtle Mountain

Having completed a gruelling climb of Turtle Mountain, the Youth Ambassadors of the Rights of the Child Commission (RCC) signed a declaration for youth empowerment in Guyana.
The declaration, part of a youth camp at Iwokrama, commits to ideals and standards of youth participation and development in pursuance of endangering a more democratic, socially cohesive and educated society.
The Turtle Mountain declaration was presented by the youths today, at a press conference held at the RCC’s Queenstown Office. Youth Ambassador, Shaquawn Gill explained that one of the standards adopted is to continue to fervently pursue educational and professional advancement in the interest of their social economic advancement.
“As youths ambassadors, we believe every day is another day to learn…therefore we intended to put our educational development abode other things.”
The youths will also continue to nurture and cultivate their own self-moving ability by adopting the relevant and requisite values and skills; to endeavor to wield a salutary influence and role set the level of their individual communities in endangering a society free from the myriad of social ills; and to continue to live by and conform with the established values of the RCC’s youth ambassadorship programme.
Gill noted that the youth ambassadorship programme has given youths an opportunity to have a positive influence to everyone they come in contact with: “With this influence, we hope to stand strong in the fight against suicide and many other many other negative epidemics that affects today’s society.”
Chairperson of the Rights of the Child Commission, Aleema Nasir noted that the ambassadors continue to be supportive of the work of the RCC. She said that youths will be able to go back into their communities, give back and engage children of their own ages.
Ambassadors Nareema Khan, Ruth Wilson, Naiome Bacchus and Jeremy Fraser also spoke of their experiences during the youth camp. They had the opportunity to engage and interact with youths from the Fairview Village among other activities.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chairperson of the Rights of the Child Commission, Aleema Nasir, Amar Panday and commissioner, Nicole Cole were also present at the briefing.
