Youth Conference culminates with presentation of scholarships

The inaugural National Youth Conference ended yesterday with ten youths awarded scholarships to study at Global Technology in fields of their choosing.

The initiative was part of the Youth Department’s aim to build the capacity of young people. Receiving scholarships were Trevon Johnson, Yvonne Barrow, Krystal Thomas, Gabriela Watson, Kenisha Grant, Analisa James, John Carew, Shahad Husain, Shemar Davis and Kunal Briglall.

Speaking to the Department of Public Information (DPI), the awardees were excited to be chosen during the random selection process from the hundreds of delegates who participated in the conference.

Shemar Davis said he was grateful to have an opportunity to study at the institution: “I was not expecting this, to be honest, but nevertheless I am thankful and thanks to the Department of Youth, also Global Technology for this wonderful scholarship!”

Analisa James who has a deep interest in information and communications technology said she cannot wait to further her education in the field. James, who hails from Region Two, said, “I feel really great because information technology is really my thing and receiving a scholarship is just another push ahead for me in my education.”

Shahad Husain from Crabwood Creek Region Six stated that “it was an unexpected pick out the bag so I am very glad that I have a scholarship at Global which is good. It is a surprise and it is very shocking out of so many persons I am one of them who got picked so I am very grateful and thank god that I received this scholarship.”

The awarding of the scholarships brought the total to 13 persons who were afforded the opportunity to further their studies. The first three lucky youths received their scholarships from Cacique Accounting College. Two other delegates also received computer tablets compliments of Courts Guyana. The first-ever National Youth Conference was held under the theme “Youth Perspective for Empowerment and Development for a better Guyana”.
