Zeeburg Secondary scores record 88% Matriculation

The Zeeburg Secondary School, West Demerara held its 51st Graduation and Prize Giving Exercise on December 6, with 63 students matriculating after writing the CSEC examinations.
Delivering the Academic School Year’s Report was Graduate Headmistress Bonita Blair, who noted that of the 24 subjects offered by the school at C-SEC Examination, 100 percent passes were recorded in nine subject areas while 50 percent and more were recorded in 23 subject areas.
“Seventy-two students sat the CSEC Examination in 24 subject areas namely Agricultural Science, Biology, Caribbean History, Chemistry, Economics, EDPM, English A, English B, Family and Resource Management, Food, Nutrition and Health, Geography, Human and Social Biology, Industrial Technology, Information Technology, Integrated Science, Mathematics, O.A, P.O.B, P.O.A, Physics, Portuguese, Social Studies, Spanish and Technical Drawing of which 63 gained passes in Mathematics and English A along with three other subjects and more. In other words, 88 percent of our students matriculated. The only subject that recorded below 50 percent pass was Chemistry while 23 subjects recorded above 50 percent pass rate. It must be noted that nine subject areas recorded 100 percent passes and notable was 95 percent and 90 percent passes in English A and Mathematics respectively,” said Blair.
The school’s vision is to ensure every individual has access to educational, cultural and sporting experiences which cater for his or her all-around development and equip them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to make a meaningful contribution to national development. In this light, the Headteacher further boasted of the school’s continuous participation in extra-curricular activities.
“We participated in the Regional Mashramani Competition and got two second places. We have active religious societies, a functioning Debate club and we observe all religious celebrations. We believe in extra-curricular activities will continue to excel in that field.”
Delivering remarks was District Education Officer Devendra Persaud who noted that the school has seen tremendous improvements since 2014.”In the year 2014 your matriculation was 51 percent, in 2015 it grew to 60 percent and in the last three years, it grew significantly. I am proud of this school and may I add that the direction currently being taken by the Ministry of Education has not only shown an improvement in this school but the majority of the secondary schools in this region.”
In her conclusion, HM Blair posited that her school hopes to continue to provide a safe environment conducive to learning of a high standard, an increase in in-house training, improved discipline, strengthened supervision at all levels, ensuring students have access to more cultural and sporting experiences and integrating technology in teaching.
The school has a total enrollment of 469 students with 41 academic staff members and nine ancillary staff members.
