UN Resident Coordinator calls on Foreign Minister – commits to support national implementation of SDGs

United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Mikiko Tanaka, yesterday extended congratulations to Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Honourable Hugh Todd.

During a courtesy call at Takuba Lodge, Ms. Tanaka also briefed Minister Todd on the reforms at the level of the United Nations especially the repositioning of the United Nations Development System (UNDS) and its implications for the work of the office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Guyana.

“I look forward to working together as there is lots to do particularly in areas of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and COVID-19,” Ms. Tanaka said.

Further, the Resident Coordinator stated that in celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, the Secretary-General has requested that the agencies listen to the public, particularly the younger generation, as part of efforts to examine the role multinational organizations could play in this era.

Minister Todd expressed his gratitude to Ms. Tanaka for her continued support.

“We’re always committed to the policy agenda set forth by the United Nations and we hope for advanced benefits during the upcoming period,” the Foreign Minister said.

“Our Government is committed to ensure that we have balanced development, resources are shared equitably and that the needs of communities are met. Furthermore, we’re working to ensure that no community is left behind,” Minister Todd explained.

The United Nations has long been a strong and trusted development partner of Guyana and has aided in the promotion of the implementation of the global development agenda in the country.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNMENT OF THE COOPERATIVE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA

The Public Diplomacy Department, Press Statement – Wednesday, May 1, 2019

The Government of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana is following with attention and deep concern the evolution of events in the Bolivarian  Republic of Venezuela, in particular with regard to the potential for grave consequences both for its civilian population, and for the peace and security of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Guyana reiterates its rejection of violence and the threat or use of force as acceptable means for the resolution of conflict, and calls upon all parties involved to vigorously pursue the search for a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis for the benefit and well being of the Venezuelan people.
