Children with Special Education Needs receive tablets from Education Ministry

Three children with Special Education Needs from the mining town of Linden are now in a better position to learn. Their mother Nicola Peters reached out directly to the Honourable Minister of Education Priya Manickchand on social media for assistance with electronic tablets to ensure her children can continue learning while schools are closed for the majority of the school population due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The three children Shaquan Peters 8, Shakira Peters 13 and Shalda Peters 15, who all have some form of disability, received two tablets to be used by the three of them from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education Mr. Alfred King, this morning, at the Ministry’s Brickdam head office.

The Permanent Secretary, who made the presentation on behalf of the Minister of Education, to the three children who were accompanied by their mother and father Nicola and Ovid Peters, noted that the Education Ministry will continue to assist where possible. He said that the Minister of Education is passionate in ensuring that during the pandemic learning loss is significantly reduced among learners.

The mother explained that Shakira has not been to school for many years since she can only move around in a wheelchair or if she is assisted to do so. Notwithstanding her challenges, the mother explained that she ‘catches on’ quickly and the tablet will go a far way in ensuring that the child continues to learn. In relation to the other children, the parent explained that Shaquan attends One Mile Primary school while Shalda attends the Special Needs School in Linden.
