Collective effort needed to keep Guyana clean — PM Phillips
Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), Mark Phillips called for collective responsibility in tackling solid waste disposal across Guyana, as he participated in the national clean-up campaign at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara on Saturday morning.
He stressed that the initiative is not only about removing garbage, but also about sending a message to citizens that each has a role in maintaining a clean environment.
The prime minister noted that the City Council, Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs), and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) are primarily tasked with waste management, but insisted that proper disposal and community participation are critical to achieving a cleaner Guyana.
“This activity is about sensitising the public and reminding all of us that we must work together. A cleaner Guyana requires the involvement of every citizen,” he said.
Prime Minister Phillips emphasised that the campaign is part of an effort sustained over the past six years and will continue.
He said that, “We need to play our part as citizens of Guyana in keeping our country clean. When I was growing up some 55 years ago, I used to hear about a garden city. I still want to hear about the garden city.”
Similar activities were conducted nationwide, with Ministers, Government officials, Joint Services, regional representatives and residents participating.
The PM also visited several other areas across Georgetown, including Smyth Street, Hunter Street, the Kingston Seawall, Sophia (Dennis Street), Mandela Avenue, Croal and Alexander Streets, and Avenue of the Republic to assess and contribute to the work being done.
