First Lady flips switch, shares gifts at Tuschen tree lighting ceremony
Hundreds of children were beneficiaries of early Christmas presents at First Lady, Mrs. Arya Ali’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Tuschen.
Residents braved the inclement weather to partake in the event to ring in the festive season.
Minister of Education and geographical representative for Region Three, Hon. Priya Manickchand set the tone for evening. Reflecting on the disastrous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister said this holiday season brings hope.
“Many people have lost. Many people have gotten sick, but Christmas in this pandemic comes at a time when we have a good chance to reflect on the birth of Christ and all that that means to all of us,” she said.
The Minister also expressed her wish for Guyanese to work in unison to overcome challenges.
“If we are our brother’s keeper, if we can share with each other, if we can help each other, then we will get through any hard time that hits us individually, as a family, as a country or as a world.”
Further, she appealed to residents to join the Government’s efforts to develop the nation.
“We ask in this time for your partnership, for your commitment to walk this walk with us and make Guyana into the beautiful country we all know she is capable of being.”
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Hon. Deodat Indar also attended the ceremony. He took the opportunity to praise the talented young people who performed through song and storytelling at the ceremony.
Other government officials and members of the Region’s neighbourhood and regional democratic councils also attended the event.
Tuschen’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony was one of three held within the Region. Other ceremonies were held at Parika and Vreed-en-Hoop.
