Georgetown Domino Association donates to Sophia Primary School and St. Stephen’s Primary School

(August 29, 2019) – The Georgetown Domino Association (GDA) today made a financial donation to two primary schools within the capital city, Sophia Primary School and the St. Stephen’s Primary School.

The donation was handed over to the Minister of Education, Dr. the Hon. Nicolette Henry at the Ministry of Education’s 26 Brickdam office.

Vice-President of the GDA, Mr. Colin Boyce said that the association is happy to make the donation to the two schools and looks forward to greater collaboration with the Ministry. Mr. Boyce was accompanied by other executive members of the GDA.

He said that the GDA is interested in having domino played in schools as a recreational sport. He said that the game can serve to promote comradery and social cohesion among students.

Further, Mr. Boyce explained that in the future, competitions can be promoted in schools whereby students can win educational prizes to benefit their respective schools.

He said that one aim of the GDA is to change the image of the sport by expanding its reach and enforcing rules of engagement.

Minister Henry thanked the GDA for its timely contribution to the improvement of the education sector. She said that the government of Guyana has prioritized education in Guyana to the extent that it is the sector that receives the highest budgetary allocation.

The Education Minister noted that more work needs to be done and said that she looks forward to as many stakeholders and partners as possible. The donation, Minister Henry said will be used to benefit the two schools in the best way possible.

Minister Henry said that she sees great potential for the partnership with the GDA and noted that sport is an excellent tool for the nation’s young people to develop.
