Hinterland youths urged to keep their environment clean- Minister Hastings-Williams

President David Granger and Minister within the Ministry of Communities Dawn Hastings-Williams were yesterday in Region 7 (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) for the opening of the Upper Mazaruni Games 2017, where they distributed a quantity of school bags and books to primary school students of the village. Minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton and Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous People’s Affairs Valerie Garrio-Lowe also distributed exercise books to the youths of the Kamarang/Warawatta district.

Minister Hastings-Williams also took opportunity to explain to the children gathered in Sports Ground,the importance of having a clean environment. She urged the youngsters that they too can make a difference to Guyana; by keeping their surroundings clean through Green Generation Guyana Project.

The Green Generation Guyana Project is an awareness project launched in August 2016 by Minister Hastings-Williams, it was developed with the aim of encouraging school aged children to adopt safe waste management practices.

Over 200 students from 20 primary schools across Guyana have benefitted from the project since its beginning at three summer camps along the Linden Soesdyke Highway in 2016. Some 60 students from four schools in Region Three will be targeted when the camp commences from August 14 to the 25, 2017.

Minister Hastings-Williams urged the children to inform their communities about what they have learned, “I hope that you would take what you have learned back to your homes and schools and churches to share with those who were not here” she said.

The next phase of the project begins in October and will target students in Mabaruma and Anna Regina.
