Momentum builds as nationwide cleanup campaign expands
A powerful display of unity and civic pride unfolded early Saturday morning as government ministers, members of the joint services, the private sector, and citizens joined forces in a nationwide clean-up campaign aimed at restoring communities and reinforcing a culture of cleanliness.
The initiative, conceptualised by His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, continues to be part of a broader vision to create a cleaner, healthier, and more developed Guyana.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag and her team covered the exercise along Avenue of the Republic where she underscored the importance of sustained national effort.
“For the last five years, the president has been driving this national enhancement initiative to foster a culture of cleanliness and pride in our environment,” she told the Department of Public Information (DPI).
Minister Parag also added that, “We are building a Guyana where people feel proud of their surroundings, and that requires a clean and safe environment as we move towards becoming a developed nation.”

The education minister highlighted that the exercise goes beyond a single day of activity, pointing to continued investments in garbage trucks, street bins, and stronger enforcement measures to tackle littering.
“This is a sustained national effort involving all stakeholders, and it reflects our commitment to transforming not just our infrastructure but also our mindset,” she said.
Meanwhile, Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Pauline Sukhai spearheaded the exercise on Croal Street.
She emphasised that the campaign is being replicated in the ten administrative regions.
“This is a national effort happening across the country, with the goal of ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all Guyanese,” she stated.

She further urged citizens to take personal responsibility.
She added, “Take pride in your country. Dispose of your litter properly and help maintain a clean and beautiful environment for everyone.”
Minister Sukhai stressed that behavioral change is critical as Guyana continues its development trajectory, encouraging citizens to adopt cleaner habits in their daily lives.
On Durban Street, stretching from Durban to Sussex, Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency Sheldon Howell joined the exercise, highlighting the importance of collective action.
“It is about leadership by example. When the Head of State participates, it sends a clear message that keeping our environment clean is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.

The nationwide clean-up exercise continues to reflect the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability while encouraging citizens to play an active role in shaping a cleaner, greener, and more unified Guyana.
