Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes, on Wednesday, assured that there are approximately 12 ICT Hubs to be added to the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region before the end of 2019. She also reiterated that her ministry stands committed to ensuring Guyana goes online, and residents benefit from the services it provides.

Speaking briefly with the Department of Public Information (DPI) at the ‘Government comes to you’ outreach in Region 2, Minister Hughes said her ministry is working assiduously to establish free internet connectivity in every community.

“Only three weeks ago, we were able to provide internet services to six locations in Orealla, and this is an example of what we are mandated to do… So, even if persons don’t have telephone signal, they can make calls via the internet. All government buildings; including the police stations, nursery and primary schools will be connected.”

Additionally, the Public Telecommunications Minister said recently, several high-powered satellite dishes along with other equipment were purchased and will soon be installed in several remote communities.

“GTT is a private community, and it is our hope that when we complete the liberalisation process, they will be able to expand and other companies, under the new legislation, will be able to set up businesses to provide services,” Minister Hughes disclosed.

The Ministry of Public Telecommunications is three-years-old and has made it possible for more than 170 schools and 180 government offices to have internet access. Its main objective is to ensure that Guyanese have easy access to the internet no matter where they reside.
