National Clean-Up effort builds discipline, civic pride
A renewed push for a cleaner, greener Guyana took shape at dawn, as ranks turned out in full force for the national clean-up exercise around the city of Georgetown.
Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, alongside members of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force, joined efforts to take part in the exercise on Saturday morning along the Kingston Seawall Esplanade.

Describing the initiative as more than a one-day effort, Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken underscored the importance of fostering a culture of cleanliness within the force.
He said that such efforts are key to enhancing both the environment and overall performance.
The commissioner expressed that it is “helping the police now to understand the environment in which they live must be clean and tidy, and so they can meet the full potential.“
He explained that the initiative is expected to instill discipline and a greater sense of respect for the environment, while also encouraging collaboration with the wider public for the benefit of communities across Guyana.

The commissioner also expressed confidence that the exercise will extend beyond public spaces to include police stations and outposts, with plans already in place to implement regular monthly clean-up activities.
The national clean-up forms part of a broader government push to promote environmental responsibility and civic pride, as authorities continue to encourage a lasting shift in public attitudes toward cleanliness and community care.
