  • to plan effective response to influx of Venezuelans and nationals

DPI, Guyana, Thursday, July 5, 2018

A Guyanese mission will be in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela from July 12-16 to enable the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Citizenship to plan a more effective response to the influx of Venezuelan migrants and returning nationals to Guyana.

This was today announced by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon at a post-Cabinet press briefing.

The mission will be led by Director of the Frontier Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Barbara Haley.

Minister Harmon said the mission aims to reassess the consular services being provided to Guyanese in the neighbouring country.

He said the government was informed that there are close to 20,000 Guyanese living in Puerto Ordaz, hence the need for a better facility.

An Honorary Consul is in Puerto Ordaz, however, Minister Harmon said there needs to be a more “solid arrangement”, where Guyanese can access quality services.

Many Venezuelans and Guyanese nationals are fleeing that country which is experiencing an economic and political crisis.
