$1.5M bursary awarded to top 100 NGSA students

— Ansa McAl Trading continues tradition of awarding academic excellence

This year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) top performing students, were honoured for their performance with a cash incentive along with school supplies from Ansa McAl Trading (Guyana). The bursary award totalled $1.5M.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the National Centre for Education Resource Development (NCERD)’s boardroom, Minister of Education, Honourable Dr. Nicolette Henry commended the students on their performance.

“Collectively, I think that this is a group that has done very well; certainly, better than what we have seen in many years… This is the beginning of a very long journey… reflect on your journey ahead and endeavour to continue along that path. Also, carve new pathways that may result in greater achievements,” she said.

The Honourable Education Minister also commended teachers and parents for their efforts in preparing the students for the NGSA. She noted that while all the students who wrote the examinations this year might not have been placed at the school of their choice, the Education Ministry is working, “collectively to ensure that all Secondary Schools will provide students with the support and environment that is necessary for them to realise their full potential”.

Chief Education Officer (CEO), Marcel Hutson encouraged all the students to dream big. “You can become whatever you want to become! Let no one distract you or deter you from what you want to become; whether you aspire to become an astronaut, scientist whatever you wish will happen. Where there is a way there is a will… seize opportunities when they are presented to you,” he urged.

Business Unit Head of the Non-Alcoholic Division – Ansa McAL, Errol Nelson pledged the company’s continued support towards the development of the country’s education sector. “Our company holds the view as leaders we must think beyond our interest and consider the interest of those we lead and serve and the interest of the communities in which we operate. We will continue to challenge ourselves to be better as today’s exercise is just the tip of the iceberg of us doing so,” Nelson said.

The ministry will be visiting those students in far-flung communities who could not attend the ceremony to present them with their cheques.
